Not Almost 40
I spent most of my 29th year telling people my age was “almost 30.” Not sure why it was so important to be “almost 30,” especially when I was actually the age most people over 40 want to be. So as I roll 39 - today - the reason my brother believes this day will live in infamy, I am determined to own it. I will be 39.
Thirty-eight has been a really interesting year. It’s taken me until now to find balance in my life - between work and kids and spouse and home. I do miss hanging out with middle schoolers because they would have told me that I definitely look 27. Ah…
So maybe I don’t look my age, and I mostly don’t feel what I thought 39 would feel like (you know when you’re 19 and 39 sounds so old), but my body is telling me that it actually is 39. Creaky knees. Jibbly places that once were not so jibbly. And finessing the fine art of reading glasses.
So my antidote to some of these things…
Chock my knees up to a track injury when I was 18. Trouble then, still trouble now.
My jibbly parts may go away since I started some cardio - helped immensely by my dad, who picks me up two evenings a week to go to the gym. Otherwise I don’t go. I’m a baby.
This morning Asher found my reading glasses and told me in his bossy three-year old way to put them on. When I did, he started dancing this silly dance and said many times, “you look pretty.” He’s never said this phrase before and I will keep wearing my reading glasses just for the hope of hearing it again.
So, here I am 39. I am you. I will be you. I will look… uh…
…not *quite* you?

Happy happy birthday friend! You are pretty and you don’t look 39–We’ll all be so envious of you when we’re all saggy baggy 80 year olds and you’re still lookin’ like a spry 60 year old

You *are* so pretty! That’s just what I was thinking when I read this, and then other people had to beat me to the punch to tell you.
At least you have certain body parts that will not be saggybaggyjiggly like mine (I have had two multitaskers who like to eat and jumperoo at the same time: not pretty).
I’m glad you had a birthday: I’m glad you’re here.
